One thing that stands out about GOCYCLE is team work. At every stage, from its inception six years
ago to how we plan an expedition, from the cycling to the outreach we do along the way. From
establishing host connects in different cities to the very nuances of every day, it is team work.
Working in teams makes every challenge fun to overcome and I don’t mean to joke when I say ‘fun to
overcome.’ Consider cycling 310 km in one day! That’s what we had to complete on the final day of
our very first expedition in 2016. We were to reach Bangalore from Koppal in Karnataka. It was to be
our final leg but the thought was daunting, we had never done this distance ever before on a bicycle,
this was our first time. We fed out of our previous day’s experience.
We broke down the distance into how much each one on the team could do. We had to start early to
cover as much distance as possible before the midday heat slows us down. We used the ‘burst and rest’
principle. Each cyclist would do a quick 5km burst and then switch with another to rest, this way
the workload was shared, time saved and distance covered in quick time.
Team work also requires sacrifice. Someone on the team had to start early, which means less recovery
time from the previous day’s cycling, less sleep, cycling in the dark, negotiating heavy vehicle traffic
in the early hours. With our team someone has always put their hand up and we have all taken turns
to do what the team requires. one person sacrificed for the sake of the team, he started early, 4am!
The rest is history!

Moses while passing the leadership to Joshua encourages the people of Israel in the wilderness to have
courage and not be afraid as they cross the Jordan to occupy the promised land. The Lord himself
goes ahead of you to cross the Jordan to give nations for you to possess. The Lord will never leave you
nor forsake you, he said. This promise holds good to God’s children even today! We have El-Shaddai,
the Almighty God on our team! We are never alone in facing impossible challenges, our God
specialises in accomplishing that which is impossible. We will overcome, take courage!
Scripture:
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes
with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6
Key Lesson: Working in teams makes complex and difficult challenges less burdensome. Good teams
look out for each other within, serve and sacrifice to accomplish great things outside! Good teams are
ones that have God in it.
